It usually falls under late May to June. The celebration has been observed for over 2000 years to commemorate Qu Yuan, a folk figure, and to ward off evil and disease.

Yuan’s spirit is believed to transform into a water dragon after he drowned himself, having received tragic news. The legend turned tradition involves eating sticky rice dumplings and organising rides with dragon shaped boats.
