Land is scarce in China. This problem causes land prices to surge making finding graveyards for burials difficult and expensive. Cremation is the mandated form of executing final rites in China but the situation is so bad that there is a lack of small graveyard spots for ashes too.

The government came up with a solution – sea burials. Families who have lost their loved ones are incentivised by the government to opt for sea burials stating the overall costs shall be undertaken by them. The government also sponsors families by offering a sum of money, if they choose this method.
